New Delhi: Major ports cargo reached 915.17 million tonnes in FY 2025–26, surpassing the annual target and recording a 7.06% year-on-year growth, the government said.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways reported that cargo handling exceeded the 904 MT target. Moreover, the performance reflected improved efficiency and sustained recovery in the maritime sector.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the achievement showed the government’s focus on strengthening port infrastructure. He added that the growth aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to build a global maritime hub. In addition, he said the milestone reinforced efforts under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
Data showed that Deendayal Port Authority handled 160.11 MT, the highest among all ports. Paradip Port Authority followed with 156.45 MT, while Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority recorded 102.01 MT. Other ports, including Visakhapatnam, Mumbai, Chennai, and New Mangalore, also reported strong performance.
Major ports cargo growth driven by capacity and efficiency gains
Mormugao Port Authority recorded the highest growth rate at 15.91%. Meanwhile, Kolkata Dock System registered 14.28% growth, and JNPA posted 10.74%. These gains reflected improved operational efficiency and rising cargo volumes.
Officials said multiple factors supported this growth. These include capacity expansion, better multimodal connectivity, and stronger hinterland links. Furthermore, ports adopted digital systems and improved turnaround time for cargo handling.
Key commodities such as coal, crude oil, containers, fertilisers, and petroleum products contributed significantly. At the same time, authorities said ease of doing business measures also boosted port performance.
Overall, officials said the strong cargo performance indicated growing trade confidence. They added that continued investments and reforms would help major ports cargo sustain momentum and support India’s global trade ambitions.
