West Asia situation: Govt issues key updates on fuel, travel and safety

New Delhi: The Centre issued a comprehensive update on the West Asia situation India, outlining steps to ensure fuel supply, travel support and citizen safety.

The government said it is closely monitoring developments in the Gulf region. Meanwhile, it emphasised preparedness across energy, transport and external affairs sectors.

Fuel supply remains stable amid West Asia developments

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas assured uninterrupted availability of petrol, diesel and LPG. However, citizens were advised to avoid panic buying and rely only on official information.

Moreover, authorities urged people to use digital platforms for LPG bookings instead of visiting distributors. As a result, online bookings have risen sharply, improving efficiency.

To prevent diversion, Delivery Authentication Code-based LPG deliveries increased from 53% in February to 90%. In addition, over 51 lakh domestic LPG cylinders were delivered in a single day.

At the same time, the government expanded access to 5 kg LPG cylinders without address proof. Consequently, more than 90,000 such cylinders were sold in one day.

Authorities also encouraged the use of alternative fuels such as PNG, induction and electric cooking systems. Furthermore, PNG expansion has accelerated, with 3.6 lakh connections activated and 3.9 lakh new registrations since March.

Strong monitoring and enforcement measures in place

The government strengthened enforcement to curb hoarding and black marketing. For instance, officials seized over 50,000 LPG cylinders and issued more than 1,400 notices to distributors.

Additionally, state governments were directed to conduct daily press briefings and counter misinformation. Control rooms and monitoring committees have also been activated nationwide.

Maritime operations and seafarers remain safe

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways confirmed that port operations across India remain normal. Likewise, no congestion has been reported at major ports.

Importantly, all Indian seafarers in the region are safe. Authorities also stated that no incidents involving Indian-flagged vessels were reported in the past 24 hours.

Travel and evacuation efforts continue to improve

The Ministry of External Affairs continues to assist Indian nationals in the region. So far, around 7,02,000 passengers have returned to India since February 28.

Flight operations are gradually stabilising across multiple countries. For example, services are operating via alternative routes where airspace restrictions remain in place.

In addition, Indian missions are providing round-the-clock support through helplines and advisories. They are also assisting with travel, visas and emergency services.

Government urges caution and responsible behaviour

The government reiterated that there is no shortage of essential fuels. Therefore, citizens should avoid panic buying and conserve energy wherever possible.

It also warned against rumours and misinformation, urging people to depend only on verified sources. Overall, authorities said coordinated efforts are ensuring stability despite global uncertainties.
