Hyderabad: The Ministry of Panchayati Raj held an Atmanirbhar Panchayat workshop in Hyderabad to promote self-reliant local governance and strengthen revenue generation in Gram Panchayats.
The event took place at the National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj on May 2. It brought together over 400 participants, including Panchayat representatives and officials. Notably, 70 Sarpanches were recognised for strong performance in Own Source Revenue generation.
Secretary Vivek Bharadwaj outlined the vision of self-reliant Panchayats. He said grassroots institutions play a key role in achieving national goals like Atmanirbhar Bharat. Moreover, he urged leaders to act decisively and drive local development through innovation.
Atmanirbhar Panchayat focus on revenue and governance
Special Chief Secretary M. Dana Kishore stressed the need to strengthen financial independence. He said Panchayats must increase Own Source Revenue and reduce reliance on grants. In addition, he called for better planning and adoption of best practices.
Officials from Telangana and central ministries participated in the discussions. They highlighted the importance of accountability and community participation. Meanwhile, NABARD officials emphasised coordinated institutional efforts for rural growth.
The workshop also featured a live demonstration of the programme portal. It provided practical guidance on project planning and digital implementation. Furthermore, participants engaged in an interactive session to clarify queries.
The programme aims to support Panchayats in developing bankable projects. It will provide technical assistance and encourage partnerships with financial institutions. As a result, officials said it will help build financially strong and self-sufficient local bodies.
