Indian Railways approves ₹895 crore projects for metro and bridges

New Delhi: Indian Railways approved railway projects approval worth ₹895.30 crore to upgrade metro power systems and strengthen bridge infrastructure, aiming to improve capacity and operational safety.

The largest component includes ₹671.72 crore for Kolkata Metro’s North–South Corridor. This upgrade will add seven traction substations and enhance power systems from 11 KV to 33 KV. As a result, train frequency can improve from five minutes to 2.5 minutes.

Officials said the existing system, built in the 1980s, had reached capacity limits. Therefore, the upgrade will ensure reliable power supply and support higher passenger demand. It will also reduce maintenance issues caused by ageing infrastructure.

In addition, the improved system will boost efficiency and provide a better commuter experience. Authorities expect smoother operations once the enhanced network becomes functional.

Railway projects approval strengthens freight corridor bridge

Indian Railways also approved a ₹223.58 crore bridge project in the Adra division under South Eastern Railway. The work involves reconstructing the Damodar bridge substructure between Madhukunda and Damodar.

The existing bridge, built in 1903 and 1965 for different lines, has shown structural distress. Hence, officials decided to rebuild critical sections to ensure safety and reliability.

This route connects key industrial hubs such as Asansol and Tatanagar. Moreover, it forms part of a major coal corridor and a Dedicated Freight Corridor feeder line.

Officials said the upgraded bridge will improve freight movement and support industries in the Durgapur–Asansol region. It will also enhance operational efficiency on a high-density route handling 67 GMT traffic.

Overall, the railway projects approval marks a step towards modernising rail infrastructure. It aims to improve safety, increase capacity and meet growing transport demand.
