Kavitha targets governments over Pharma City land acquisition

Hyderabad: Telangana Rakshana Sena president Kalvakuntla Kavitha accused both the previous BRS government and the current Congress administration of pursuing aggressive land acquisition policies in the Pharma City region.

Addressing an all-party meeting at the Basheerbagh Press Club on Thursday, Kavitha alleged that the earlier BRS government acquired 13,500 acres from farmers for the Pharma City project. She further claimed that the Congress government now planned to acquire 30,000 acres for the proposed Future City project.

The Anti-Pharma City Struggle Committee and Telangana People’s Joint Action Committee organised the meeting. During her speech, Kavitha questioned the projected employment benefits linked to the Pharma City and data centre projects.

She also raised concerns over environmental damage in the region. According to her, pollution levels had increased sharply because of industrial expansion around the proposed project areas.

Kavitha further alleged that authorities were forcibly acquiring lands belonging to tribal communities while influential landlords escaped scrutiny. In addition, she declared support for affected farmers and tribal groups resisting the projects.

She said she was prepared to join protests to protect agricultural lands and tribal properties in the affected villages.

Land acquisition debate raises environmental fears

Retired High Court judge Justice Chandra Kumar expressed concern over the shrinking extent of agricultural land because of industrial projects and real estate expansion. He warned that unchecked land acquisition could create food security problems in the future.

Moreover, he criticised political leaders for failing to honour promises made to farmers during elections. Professor Haragopal also accused governments of creating conflict between farmers and state authorities in the name of development.

Referring to pollution issues in the Patancheru industrial belt, he questioned the establishment of polluting industries in fertile agricultural areas. He further alleged that successive governments continued anti-farmer policies despite changes in political leadership.

Several leaders and activists from different political parties attended the meeting and extended support to the agitation against the Pharma City project. Representatives from CPI, AAP, Dharma Samaj Party and Telangana-based organisations participated in the programme.

Pharma City Anti-Struggle Committee convener Saraswathi Kavula, co-convener Kanneganti Ravi and several activists also joined discussions on land acquisition and environmental concerns.
