Air Cushion Vehicles girder laying ceremony held in Goa

Goa: The Indian Coast Guard conducted the girder laying ceremony for the 4th, 5th and 6th Air Cushion Vehicles at Rassaim Yard of Chowgule Shipyard in Goa on May 11, 2026. Officials organised the event under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The vehicles are being built with 50% indigenous material. Therefore, the project marks a major step toward self-reliance and domestic defence manufacturing. In addition, it supports technological advancement in maritime capability.

The Coast Guard signed the contract for six indigenously fabricated Air Cushion Vehicles with Chowgule & Company Private Limited on October 24, 2024. Since then, the shipyard has progressed with construction work in phases.

Air Cushion Vehicles to strengthen coastal operations

The new Air Cushion Vehicles will support high-speed coastal patrol and reconnaissance missions. They will operate in shallow waters, marshy areas and deep-sea regions. Moreover, they will conduct interception and interdiction during day and night operations.

The vehicles will also assist in search and rescue missions. They will provide support to ships and boats in distress. Consequently, the deployment will enhance operational flexibility along India’s coastline.

Officials said the ACVs will safeguard the country’s vast coastal zone. Furthermore, they will improve strategic mobility for the Indian Coast Guard. The project reflects continued focus on indigenous defence production.

With this development, the Coast Guard aims to expand maritime readiness and response capability. The ceremony concluded with participation from defence officials and shipyard representatives.
