Tripura power sector review focuses on smart metering and solar expansion

Tripura: Union Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal reviewed the Tripura power sector with Chief Minister Manik Saha and senior officials in Agartala, focusing on distribution reforms, smart metering, transmission upgrades and renewable energy expansion.

The meeting examined the progress of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) and the operational and financial performance of the state’s power utilities. The minister stressed the need to reduce Aggregate Technical and Commercial losses and improve revenue collection across the distribution network.

He urged the state to accelerate the conversion of government electricity consumers to prepaid meters. He also reviewed the implementation of smart metering projects and called for faster execution of pending works.

Tripura committed to converting all government consumers to prepaid metering by August 2026. The state also pledged to complete the remaining smart meter installations by July 2027.

Manohar Lal reviewed resource adequacy planning and the status of intra-state transmission projects. He advised the state government to ensure that transmission infrastructure expansion keeps pace with rising electricity demand.

Tripura power sector targets solar and transmission growth

During the review, officials discussed progress under PM-KUSUM and PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The minister encouraged the state to use both schemes to expand access to clean energy, especially in remote and underserved areas.

The state government committed to installing rooftop solar systems for two lakh consumers by March 2027. Officials said the initiative would help reduce electricity costs for households while increasing renewable energy generation.

The meeting also focused on strengthening transmission infrastructure in line with the state’s long-term resource adequacy plan. According to officials, improved transmission capacity will support future demand growth and enhance grid reliability.

Manohar Lal said sustained efforts in distribution reforms, smart metering and clean energy adoption would help make the state’s DISCOM financially viable. He added that these measures could strengthen the long-term self-sufficiency of the power sector.

The Union Minister assured continued support from the Central government for Tripura’s power and urban development initiatives. Chief Minister Manik Saha said the state would take all necessary steps to speed up implementation of approved projects and improve overall sector performance.
