GeM strengthens digital procurement with greater MSE and startup participation

New Delhi: Government e Marketplace (GeM) has strengthened digital public procurement in India by improving transparency, reducing manual processes and expanding opportunities for enterprises across sectors.

Since its launch in 2016, GeM has transformed government procurement through online onboarding, transparent bidding and digital contract management. As a result, businesses of all sizes have gained easier access to government markets.

The platform recorded significant growth in MSE participation. Registered MSEs increased from 2,396 in 2016–17 to over 11.9 lakh. Moreover, procurement from these units rose from ₹69 crore to more than ₹8.69 lakh crore through over 2.17 crore orders.

Similarly, startup participation expanded from 88 entities to over 40,000. Procurement from startups also exceeded ₹61,400 crore. Additionally, registered SC/ST MSEs crossed 66,000, with procurement above ₹21,800 crore.

The platform also supported healthcare services by enabling procurement of vaccine doses, syringes, diagnostic equipment and medical supplies. Furthermore, GeM uses artificial intelligence, advanced analytics and digital monitoring tools to improve efficiency.

GeM CEO Mihir Kumar said the platform has helped build a transparent and inclusive procurement ecosystem. He added that it has expanded opportunities for MSEs, startups and local manufacturers while improving public service delivery.

As India moves towards Viksit Bharat, GeM will continue strengthening digital procurement through innovation, better user experience and wider participation.
