New Delhi: Ministry of New and Renewable Energy launched the SHP Development Scheme guidelines to expand small hydro projects and strengthen India’s renewable energy capacity.
The ministry organised a national workshop with state agencies, developers, public sector organisations and industry stakeholders. The discussions focused on faster execution and better coordination.
MNRE Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi released the guidelines for FY 2026-27 to FY 2030-31. He said small hydro projects can improve energy security, support rural development and promote balanced regional growth.
New initiatives under SHP Development Scheme
The Solar Energy Corporation of India will implement the programme as the National Programme Implementing Agency. The initiative includes support for Detailed Project Reports, technical institutions, awareness programmes and project monitoring.
Officials said India has nearly 21 GW of small hydro potential, but much of the capacity remains untapped. Therefore, the government aims to encourage states to identify viable projects and speed up approvals.
Additionally, the National Informatics Centre demonstrated an online portal for applications, approvals, monitoring and fund management. The system will improve transparency and make implementation more efficient.
The workshop concluded with stakeholders committing to support sustainable hydropower growth and India’s wider clean energy transition.
