New Delhi: The Bharat 6G Alliance has expanded to 90 members, strengthening India’s efforts to develop 6G technologies, spectrum planning and global telecom standards.
The industry and academia-led alliance includes telecom service providers, equipment manufacturers, startups, research institutions and universities. It has also formed seven working groups to focus on technology, spectrum, devices, applications, sustainability and industry outreach.
The Bharat 6G Alliance supports collaboration between industry and academia. It also promotes research, innovation, intellectual property development and advanced testbeds aligned with India’s 6G Vision.
The alliance’s spectrum working group has submitted a report titled Spectrum Roadmap for 6G in India. Meanwhile, the Department of Telecommunications has released its own roadmap after consulting stakeholders, including the alliance.
Bharat 6G Alliance supports research and standards
The government has approved a three-year project under the Telecom Technology Development Fund to establish a 6G Terahertz testbed at SAMEER, Kolkata.
The project includes the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati and the Indian Institute of Technology Patna as consortium partners. Moreover, the team demonstrated a high-data-rate line-of-sight link during the India Mobile Congress 2025.
India has also contributed to the International Telecommunication Union’s IMT-2030 framework by proposing ubiquitous connectivity as a key 6G usage scenario. Furthermore, it has supported coverage, interoperability and sustainability as core capabilities of future 6G networks.
The government is also helping Indian startups and MSMEs participate in international standardisation bodies through the Technology Development and Investment Promotion scheme. The programme provides financial support for memberships, international meetings, pilot testing and telecom product validation.
