New Delhi: DRDO signed two major contracts on Tuesday to advance the AEW&C MK-II programme under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The agreements cover aircraft modification and mission system development for the next-generation airborne early warning platform.
The Centre for Air Borne Systems (CABS), a DRDO laboratory, signed one contract with AI Engineering Services Limited to convert six Airbus A321 aircraft from commercial configuration to green configuration. Moreover, CABS signed another contract with Adani Defence Systems and Technologies Limited as the Development-cum-Production Partner for the programme’s mission systems.
Defence Secretary and DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh witnessed the signing ceremony in New Delhi. Therefore, the agreements marked another step towards strengthening indigenous defence manufacturing.
CABS will integrate the mission systems on the modified AEW&C MK-II platform after Airbus Defence and Space delivers the aircraft. In addition, CABS and Adani Defence Systems will conduct flight trials with the Indian Air Force to secure certification from the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification and the Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance.
AEW&C MK-II to strengthen air defence capability
The AEW&C MK-II system will provide longer endurance, advanced airborne surveillance and secure communication capabilities. Furthermore, it will improve situational awareness and strengthen command-and-control operations during missions.
DRDO said the new platform will significantly enhance India’s air defence capability by improving threat detection across extended ranges. Consequently, the programme will strengthen the country’s indigenous defence preparedness.
The organisation also said greater industry participation reflects the government’s commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing. Finally, the collaboration aims to promote innovation, research and advanced defence production within India.
