New Delhi: NHRC Assam factory blast case came under the National Human Rights Commission’s scrutiny after it took suo motu cognisance of the reported deaths of four workers in Cachar district. In the NHRC Assam factory blast case, the Commission issued notices to the Assam Chief Secretary and the Cachar Superintendent of Police and sought a detailed report within two weeks.
The Commission acted on media reports about an explosion at a metal processing factory on July 26. The blast reportedly killed four workers and left two others with severe injuries. Molten metal allegedly spilled over the workers after the explosion.
The Commission said the reported incident, if found true, raised serious concerns about human rights violations. Therefore, it directed the state authorities to submit details on the health of the injured workers. It also sought information on compensation paid to the families of those who died and to the injured workers.
NHRC Assam factory blast report to cover compensation and injuries
According to media reports published on July 27, more than 100 workers were inside the factory when the explosion occurred.
The victims’ families and local residents alleged that similar accidents had occurred at the factory in the past. However, the Commission has only sought a factual report and has not made any findings on those claims.
The NHRC Assam factory blast report must include the latest medical condition of the injured workers. It must also provide details of compensation paid to the next of kin of the deceased and to the injured workers.
The Commission directed the Assam Chief Secretary and the Cachar Superintendent of Police to submit the report within two weeks.
