New Delhi: Green hydrogen adoption in India’s petroleum refining sector is set to expand with 30 Kilo Tonnes Per Annum (KTPA) of production capacity awarded to four refineries.
The capacity was awarded under the SIGHT (Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition) Mode-2B scheme of the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM).
The government is implementing the mission to make India a global hub for green hydrogen production, use and exports. The programme also covers green hydrogen derivatives.
Indian Oil Corporation Limited received 10 KTPA for its refinery in Panipat. Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited received 5 KTPA for its Bina refinery.
Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited received another 5 KTPA for its Vizag refinery. Numaligarh Refineries Limited received the remaining 10 KTPA for its Numaligarh refinery.
Green hydrogen adoption supports clean energy goals
The projects will follow Build Own Operate (BOO) arrangements through private developers. Each developer will make project-specific investments to establish and operate the facilities.
The government expects Green hydrogen adoption to reduce India’s dependence on imported fossil fuels. It also expects the projects to improve the country’s energy security.
Moreover, domestic production and use of green hydrogen will support India’s clean energy transition. The government also links the initiative to its long-term net-zero objectives.
The 30 KTPA allocation covers four major refineries across different parts of the country. Together, these projects will create new capacity for green hydrogen production within the petroleum refining sector.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to expand both production and domestic use of green hydrogen. In addition, the mission seeks to build India’s position in the global green hydrogen market.
The government expects increased green hydrogen use to help industries shift towards cleaner energy sources. Furthermore, domestic production could reduce exposure to imported fossil fuel supplies.
Union Minister of State for New & Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik provided the details in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.
The latest capacity allocation marks another step towards wider Green hydrogen adoption in India’s refining industry. It also supports the government’s broader effort to strengthen clean energy production and reduce dependence on conventional fuels.
