New Delhi: India peak power demand reached an all-time high of 256.1 GW on April 25, with authorities meeting the requirement without any shortage, the government said.
The peak occurred at 15:38 hrs and surpassed the previous high of 250 GW recorded on May 30, 2024. It also exceeded the 245.4 GW peak observed on January 9, 2026.
Demand rose due to advancing summer conditions across the country. Moreover, electricity consumption increased by 8.9% between April 1 and 27 compared to last year.
Officials said record capacity addition of around 65 GW during FY 2025–26 supported the achievement. As a result, the system remained prepared to handle high demand and is expected to meet around 270 GW this year.
India peak power demand supported by diverse energy mix
Authorities met the demand through advance planning and optimal scheduling of resources. In addition, real-time coordination among national and regional load dispatch centres ensured smooth operations.
At peak time, thermal power contributed the largest share at 66.9%. Solar energy followed with 21.5%, while hydro, nuclear, and gas added smaller shares.
Wind energy and storage systems also supported the grid during peak hours. Therefore, the diverse mix helped maintain stability and reliability.
Officials maintained grid frequency at 50.00 Hz during the peak period. Meanwhile, efficient use of transmission corridors ensured uninterrupted supply.
The government said it would continue to strengthen infrastructure and improve coordination. This approach aims to meet rising demand and ensure long-term energy security.
