New Delhi: IndiaAI Mission-supported Avataar.ai launched the Varya AI model, an indigenous video generation technology designed to make advanced AI video creation affordable, accessible and relevant for India’s diverse needs.
The launch took place in New Delhi in the presence of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology Secretary S Krishnan and the leadership team of Avataar.ai.
The company said Varya can reduce video generation processes from 50 steps to four through a distillation technique. Consequently, the model claims to deliver comparable quality while lowering the cost of video creation.
According to Avataar.ai’s internal benchmarks, Varya can generate videos at ₹0.48 per second and offers up to 10 times greater efficiency compared with several leading global video models.
Varya AI model supports India’s digital innovation
The company designed the technology to understand India’s regional cultures, festivals, food, clothing, communities and everyday environments.
Therefore, teachers, MSMEs, businesses and citizens can transform simple text prompts or images into visual stories, educational content, advertisements and public information videos.
The product follows an Idea-to-Video-to-Story approach, allowing users to create videos and extend narratives through additional clips.
S Krishnan said the launch marked an important milestone in India’s artificial intelligence journey and reflected the government’s commitment to developing indigenous AI capabilities.
He stated that support for foundational models would strengthen deep-tech innovation, encourage scalable solutions and promote affordable technology for population-scale use.
Furthermore, Avataar announced that it would release a technical report explaining Varya’s architecture, distillation process and performance benchmarks.
Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder Sravanth Aluru said India’s AI growth would depend not only on large models but also on efficient and accessible technologies.
He said affordable AI would enable wider participation and help create future lessons, services, businesses and digital experiences for millions of users.
The company added that Varya represents a major step toward building globally competitive Indian AI products while reducing dependence on expensive computing resources.
