Hyderabad: Kazipet rail manufacturing unit will manufacture 200 intercity trains over the next five years as Indian Railways prepares to operationalise the new rolling stock facility in Telangana.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu reviewed the project along with senior railway officials on Wednesday.
Officials stated that the Kazipet rail manufacturing unit was nearing completion and would soon begin production activities.
The new intercity trains will support short-distance travel between towns and cities across the country. Railway authorities said the trains would mainly operate on routes of nearly 300 kilometres with frequent stops.
According to officials, the trains would help students, office workers and patients travel between nearby urban centres at affordable costs.
Railways also expects many passengers to shift from road transport to rail services after the introduction of the new train fleet.

The proposed intercity trains will feature automatic door closing systems, improved ventilation and safer coach designs.
Officials said each train would have a 20-coach configuration with two toilets in every coach.
The trains will also include modern bogies and jerk-free couplers to improve passenger comfort during travel.
Railway authorities stated that the trains would operate at speeds of up to 130 kmph.
In addition, the trains will use regenerative braking technology. The system generates electricity during braking and feeds power back into the grid.
Officials said the technology would improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions compared with road transport systems.
Ashwini Vaishnaw said the project would strengthen affordable and environment-friendly transport infrastructure across the country.
The Railway Ministry also expects the manufacturing unit to boost industrial activity and employment opportunities in the Kazipet region.
Officials added that the project formed part of Indian Railways’ broader efforts to modernise train manufacturing and improve regional connectivity.
