Marine gas turbine generators contract signed for Indian Navy

New Delhi: Ministry of Defence signed a Rs 425 crore contract with Bharat Forge Limited, Pune, to procure 12 sets of 1.25 MW Marine gas turbine generators for the Indian Navy. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh witnessed the agreement in New Delhi on June 19, 2026.

The contract falls under the Buy (Indian) category and mandates a minimum indigenous content of 60 percent. The project aims to strengthen domestic defence manufacturing and reduce dependence on imports for critical naval equipment.

The Ministry said the turbine generators will improve the Indian Navy’s operational readiness. In addition, the project will support end-to-end lifecycle maintenance within the country.

The generators play a key role in power generation aboard modern naval warships. They supply electricity to critical combat systems, advanced weapons and sensor networks.

Indigenous Marine gas turbine generators to boost self-reliance

The Ministry stated that the project will create a stronger domestic manufacturing ecosystem. Furthermore, it will expand India’s capability in strategic maritime technologies.

Officials said the contract marks a major step towards establishing indigenous production capacity for Marine gas turbine generators. As a result, the defence sector is expected to gain new technological expertise and manufacturing strength.

The project also aligns with the Centre’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. Moreover, it seeks to enhance self-reliance in defence production while supporting the long-term modernisation of the Indian Navy.
