Hyderabad: Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjannar said the city police had put in place strict New Year security measures to prevent untoward incidents during celebrations.
During a video conference with field-level officers from the TGICCC in Banjara Hills, he issued clear operational instructions. Officials received directions to strictly enforce rules on event timings, liquor sales and traffic discipline.
According to the Commissioner, the police would allow New Year events and celebrations only until 1 am. Any organiser who continues events beyond the permitted time will face action. Police will also act against the illegal use of high-decibel sound systems.
Regarding liquor regulations, Sajjannar said the police had completely banned backdoor liquor sales after the closure of wine shops and bars. He warned that officials would take strict legal action against violators.
To curb drunk driving, the Commissioner said police had intensified enforcement this year. As part of this plan, special drunk and drive checks began across the city from 7 pm on Wednesday.
New Year security measures include strict enforcement and checks
Across Hyderabad, police teams are conducting drunk and drive inspections at 120 locations. Offenders will face heavy fines, possible imprisonment, licence cancellation and vehicle seizure.
The special enforcement drive will continue until the first week of January. Meanwhile, the Commissioner appealed to youth to avoid rash driving, overspeeding and triple riding during celebrations.
For those consuming alcohol, Sajjannar advised using cabs or designated drivers. He warned that cab or auto drivers who refuse rides or demand extra charges will face action.
Police will register cases under Section 178(3)(b) of the Motor Vehicles Act against such drivers. Citizens facing issues can report complaints via WhatsApp on 94906 16555.
Beyond enforcement, the Commissioner urged police officers to visit orphanages, old age homes and hospitals in their jurisdictions. He said celebrating with people in need reflected the true spirit of the New Year.
Joint CP (Traffic) Joel Davis, DCPs Swetha, Apoorva Rao, Rakshitha Krishnamurthy, Rupesh, Venkata Lakshmi and other senior officers attended the meeting.
