Ponguleti challenges KTR over Indiramma housing scheme

Hyderabad: Telangana Revenue and Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy on Tuesday launched a strong attack on BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao over the Indiramma housing scheme and challenged him on housing construction in the state.

In a post on X, Ponguleti said KTR did not deserve to utter the name “Indiramma”. He accused the previous BRS government of carrying out phone tapping and surveillance, including monitoring family members.

The minister claimed that the Congress government had already started construction of 4.5 lakh houses within two-and-a-half years of assuming office. He said villagers receiving houses under the Indiramma housing scheme clearly understood the difference between the Congress government and the earlier BRS administration.

Ponguleti also criticised KTR for allegedly remaining disconnected from public issues while staying in farmhouses. He accused the BRS leadership of failing to address housing needs during its tenure in power.

The minister said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy would launch construction of another 2.5 lakh houses under the housing programme from June 1. He also stated that the Telangana Cabinet recently approved one lakh additional houses in three corporations within Hyderabad limits.

Indiramma housing scheme fuels political confrontation

Ponguleti claimed that voters had already rejected the BRS in both Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. He also referred to defeats faced by the party in Cantonment and Jubilee Hills constituencies.

The minister alleged that people were now prepared to push the BRS into political retirement in the next elections. He said the Congress government was implementing welfare programmes while the opposition only criticised them.

Ponguleti further challenged KTR to compare the housing programmes implemented by both governments. He said the Congress would not seek votes in villages where Indiramma houses were not sanctioned.

At the same time, he said the BRS should avoid asking for votes in villages where double-bedroom houses were not provided during its rule. Ponguleti then asked KTR whether he was ready to accept the challenge over the Indiramma housing scheme.

The latest exchange added to the growing political confrontation between the Congress government and the BRS leadership over welfare implementation and housing policies in Telangana.
