Hyderabad: Assembly debate challenge took centre stage as Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy challenged the BRS and BJP to a comprehensive debate on governance, welfare and development in a special session of the State Assembly and Legislative Council. The Assembly debate challenge came during his address at a public meeting in Nalgonda, where he said the Congress government was ready to compare its performance with both the previous BRS government and the BJP-led Union government.
The Chief Minister said the government would convene special sessions if the Opposition formally requested the Speaker and the Council Chairman. He said the debate should cover the manifestos and governance records of all three parties so that people could judge who had fulfilled their promises.
Revanth Reddy made the remarks after launching road development works worth ₹13,000 crore to improve 6,300 kilometres of Roads and Buildings infrastructure across Telangana. He said the projects reflected the government’s commitment to strengthening connectivity and accelerating development.
The Chief Minister praised Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy for his role in the Telangana movement. He said Komatireddy sacrificed his ministerial post and undertook an indefinite hunger strike for statehood. He also recalled the sacrifices of Telangana movement martyrs, including Srikantha Chary, Constable Kistaiah and Yadaiah.
Assembly debate challenge over welfare and development
Revanth Reddy accused the previous BRS government of pushing Telangana into heavy debt while neglecting public welfare. He alleged that the former government burdened the State with loans exceeding ₹8.11 lakh crore and failed to issue new ration cards or provide adequate housing for the poor.
He said the Congress government had distributed lakhs of new ration cards and introduced fine rice for eligible beneficiaries. According to him, the State is spending ₹16,000 crore to provide six kilograms of fine rice every month to over 3.28 crore people. He added that the government had also sanctioned 4.5 lakh Indiramma houses and was supplying 200 units of free electricity to eligible households.
Highlighting support for farmers, the Chief Minister said the government had spent ₹1.56 lakh crore on Rythu Bharosa, farm loan waiver, bonus payments and other agriculture initiatives. He said Telangana had procured nearly 80 lakh metric tonnes of paddy despite not receiving water from the Kaleshwaram project as expected.
Revanth Reddy also highlighted reforms in education and employment. He said the government was strengthening public schools from nursery to Class XII, modernising institutions for Dalits, Adivasis and poor students, and implementing Scheduled Caste categorisation. He added that the government had filled 70,000 government jobs within 30 months.
The Chief Minister said the Congress government would complete the SLBC project before the next elections and continue the Musi River rejuvenation programme despite political opposition. He asserted that the Congress would continue implementing development and welfare programmes while seeking another mandate from the people.
