Hyderabad: Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar urged employees to call off the RTC employees strike and resume duties, stating that disruptions would harm public services and the organisation.
He said a strike was not a solution and asked workers and their families to protect the RTC. He added that the government had already set up a four-member high-level committee to examine employee concerns. The panel will submit its report within four weeks, he said, and clarified that the timeline would not delay action.
Addressing the RTC employees strike, the minister said the government had accepted 29 of the 32 demands raised by staff. He noted that officials could resolve these issues immediately. However, he added that the RTC merger and union recognition involved technical aspects and required detailed discussions.
He said the government would place these pending matters before the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister for further consideration. Meanwhile, he highlighted steps taken to improve employee welfare and financial stability.
RTC employees strike impact on services and recovery
The minister said the government ensured salary payments on the first of every month. It also cleared long-pending dues, including the 2017 PRC and DA arrears. Additionally, authorities settled 2013 bonds and reduced PF dues from ₹1,205 crore to ₹600 crore.
They also cut CCS dues from ₹690 crore to ₹300 crore. The government now pays ₹75 crore every month towards PF and CCS obligations. Furthermore, recruitment of 4,538 कर्मचारियों will be completed soon to ease workload.
Officials have already provided 1,134 compassionate appointments and reinstated around 250 previously removed employees. The minister said these steps reflected the government’s commitment to strengthening RTC.
He stated that RTC was gradually recovering. Therefore, the ongoing RTC employees strike could disrupt services at a critical stage. He noted that RTC serves about 65 lakh passengers daily, including nearly 45 lakh women.
Many commuters depend on these services for education, jobs, and healthcare, he said. He urged employees to adopt democratic methods of protest without affecting operations. He added that poorer sections could not afford alternative transport.
The minister reiterated that the government remained committed to resolving all issues while appealing to staff to end the RTC employees strike.
