New Delhi: Indian Railways launched a waste management SOP booklet on World Environment Day 2026 to strengthen environmental compliance and improve waste handling practices across its network.
Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar released the booklet during a programme organised by the Ministry of Railways. He said sustainability, cleanliness and responsible resource management would remain key priorities.
Moreover, he urged all Zonal Railways to implement the guidelines effectively. He also called for stronger monitoring systems and wider adoption of best practices.
As part of the programme, officers and staff took an environmental pledge. The initiative encouraged employees to contribute to a cleaner and greener railway system.
Waste management SOP to strengthen compliance
The booklet seeks to standardise waste handling practices across railway establishments. Consequently, authorities expect greater consistency in environmental compliance throughout the network.
During the event, the ministry also announced the Swachhata Pakhwada Awards. North-Eastern Railway secured first place for its cleanliness initiatives. Meanwhile, North-Western Railway and Southern Railway finished second and third respectively.
Furthermore, the awards recognised sustained efforts to improve sanitation standards across railway zones. Officials said such initiatives support long-term environmental goals.
The programme concluded with a renewed commitment to sustainable operations. Going forward, Indian Railways plans to strengthen environmental stewardship and promote greener transport practices nationwide.
