Telangana household survey reveals socio-economic disparities

Hyderabad: Telangana household survey revealed socio-economic disparities after covering over 1.12 crore households across the state.

Authorities conducted the exercise from February 4 to 16, 2024 under the State Planning Department. An expert working group supported its design and validation process.

Officials collected data on nearly 3.55 crore individuals. Moreover, about 1.03 lakh enumerators and 76,000 supervisors carried out the survey across Telangana.

The survey gathered detailed information on caste, income, education, health, and housing. In addition, it included 57 sections with 75 data fields to support policy planning.

Key findings highlight caste distribution and inequality

Findings showed that Backward Classes account for 56.36% of the population. Scheduled Castes form 17.42%, while Scheduled Tribes make up 10.43%. Other Castes account for 15.79%.

Around 14 lakh people did not report caste details. Officials identified many of them using religion or other social categories.

Authorities developed a Community-Based Index using 42 indicators to assess backwardness. The analysis showed higher disadvantage among SC and ST communities.

Among Backward Classes, 86 communities fall under significant backwardness. Meanwhile, 31 communities showed relatively better indicators.

The Telangana household survey also pointed to gaps in education, income, and employment. Many families depend on agriculture and daily wage work.

Lower education levels remain a concern among SC, ST, and some BC groups. At the same time, access to stable jobs remains limited.

Based on the findings, the government plans targeted welfare measures by 2025. These include improving education, employment, and social security.

Authorities are also considering 42% reservation for Backward Classes in education and jobs. In addition, the “Samajika Nyayam 2.0” framework aims to ensure fair distribution of benefits.

Officials said the findings will guide evidence-based governance and support inclusive development in the state.
