Uttam says Palamuru irrigation projects accorded top priority

Hyderabad: Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Tuesday said the Telangana government had accorded top priority to Palamuru irrigation projects to address drought conditions and regional backwardness.

The Minister chaired a detailed review meeting at the State Secretariat on irrigation works in the erstwhile Mahabubnagar district. Ministers Jupally Krishna Rao and Vakiti Srihari, along with MLAs and senior irrigation officials, attended the meeting.

Irrigation Secretary E. Sridhar and Engineer-in-Chief General Ramesh Babu also participated in the review discussions on pending and ongoing projects.

Uttam Kumar Reddy assured public representatives that the government was closely monitoring project execution and resolving bottlenecks affecting progress. He said officials were making efforts to speed up implementation across the region.

The Minister stated that the government was treating projects in Palamuru on par with major schemes such as Devadula, SLBC and Sitarama projects. According to him, the Congress government aimed to correct the neglect faced by the region during the previous BRS administration.

He also announced that another review meeting would take place within a fortnight to reassess priorities and accelerate execution schedules.

Palamuru irrigation projects include Jurala revival plan

Highlighting the Jurala Project, Uttam Kumar Reddy said heavy sedimentation had reduced the reservoir’s storage capacity to below eight TMC. Therefore, the government submitted proposals to the Union Jal Shakti Ministry seeking support under the DRIP programme.

He expressed confidence that desiltation works under DRIP would improve dam safety, storage efficiency and water storage capacity.

The Minister also rejected BRS claims that the Palamuru Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Project was “90 per cent complete.” Instead, he described the claim as misleading and inaccurate.

According to Uttam Kumar Reddy, the previous government created setbacks after shifting the off-take point from Jurala to the Srisailam reservoir. He further alleged that authorities floated tenders for distributor networks without completing land acquisition for canals.

As a result, the delays created serious hurdles in project execution and infrastructure development.

The Minister directed officials to prepare a comprehensive report on work progress, pending tasks and implementation timelines for all ongoing irrigation schemes in the region.

In addition, he instructed engineers to speed up desiltation of minor irrigation tanks and complete urgent canal repair works before the monsoon season.
