Hyderabad: Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka attended the national Swachh Bharat Mission review meeting in New Delhi and highlighted Telangana’s urban waste management reforms and sustainability initiatives.
Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar inaugurated the two-day meeting at Vigyan Bhavan. Officials from different states attended the programme to discuss sanitation, solid waste management and scientific waste processing systems.
During the meeting, officials reviewed waste collection methods, remediation of legacy dump sites and waste-to-energy projects. They also discussed public-private partnership models and implementation of the new Solid Waste Management Rules.
Bhatti Vikramarka said Telangana was moving towards environmentally responsible urban development under the leadership of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. He added that the government was implementing Telangana Vision-2047 through the CURE, PURE and RARE framework.
According to him, the framework promotes balanced growth in urban, peri-urban and rural regions. He also said scientific waste management now plays a key role in climate response and economic productivity.
Swachh Bharat Mission review focuses on waste reforms
Addressing the Swachh Bharat Mission meeting, Bhatti Vikramarka said the new Solid Waste Management Rules-2026 would transform urban sanitation systems across the country.
He stated that the rules encourage four-way source segregation, decentralised waste processing and scientific remediation of old dump yards. In addition, the framework promotes waste-to-energy generation, technology-based monitoring and public participation.
Bhatti Vikramarka said Telangana had already introduced several reforms before the new rules formally came into effect. He informed the meeting that the state was introducing around 9,596 electric Swachh Auto Tippers in core urban regions.
According to him, the electric vehicles would reduce carbon emissions and improve municipal waste collection systems. He further said the vehicles would include separate compartments for four-way waste segregation.
Meanwhile, officials from various states shared best practices and experiences related to urban sanitation and solid waste management during the review sessions.
The Deputy Chief Minister also said Telangana planned to strengthen QR-code based monitoring systems for efficient door-to-door waste collection across urban areas.
