Rural schemes safeguarded amid West Asia crisis: Centre

New Delhi: The Ministry of Rural Development has stepped up measures to ensure uninterrupted implementation of key welfare and infrastructure programmes, keeping in view the evolving crisis in West Asia and its potential global impact.

Officials said the government is closely monitoring possible disruptions to supply chains, commodity prices, and inflation. As a result, proactive steps have been taken to maintain continuity in benefits, timely fund flow, and smooth execution of schemes across rural India.

Employment and wage support remain uninterrupted

The government confirmed that the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act continues to operate without disruption. All statutory provisions, including demand-based employment and timely wage payments, remain in force.

To ensure liquidity, around ₹17,744 crore has been released as the first instalment for wage payments. Moreover, the proposed VB–G RAM G Act is expected to enhance employment guarantees to 125 days, further strengthening rural livelihoods.

Housing and infrastructure plans stay on track

Under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana – Gramin, the Centre aims to construct 4.95 crore rural houses by March 2029. The ministry is prioritising direct benefit transfers, real-time monitoring, and geo-tagging to avoid delays.

Additionally, measures such as material banks are being promoted to tackle potential supply disruptions. These steps will help ensure that beneficiaries continue to receive housing support along with essential amenities like water, sanitation, and electricity.

Rural schemes preparedness ensures road connectivity

The rural schemes preparedness strategy also covers road development under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. Ongoing works under various phases are either completed, tendered, or under execution.

Furthermore, around 12,100 km of road projects under PMGSY-IV are currently in the tendering stage. Since bitumen forms a smaller share of costs, the programme remains relatively insulated from global volatility.

Focus on agriculture and natural resource resilience

The government is also strengthening watershed development under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana to improve water conservation and agricultural productivity.

In coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, efforts are being made to ensure resilience in farming systems and rural livelihoods.

Overall, the Centre emphasised that rural schemes preparedness remains robust despite global uncertainties. With coordinated planning and timely interventions, the government aims to safeguard employment, infrastructure, and welfare delivery across rural India.
