New Delhi: Organ donation pledges in India have crossed the landmark figure of 5 lakh, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to promote organ and tissue donation.
The achievement reflects growing public awareness and increasing citizen participation in a movement that offers a second chance at life to patients awaiting transplants. It also highlights the success of sustained government initiatives aimed at encouraging voluntary organ and tissue donation.
National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization Director Dr. Anil Kumar thanked citizens for their support towards the cause. He also acknowledged the contributions of government agencies, non-governmental organisations, healthcare professionals, educational institutions and media organisations in spreading awareness.
In addition, he praised State Governments and Union Territory administrations for supporting efforts to strengthen the organ donation movement across the country.
Officials said the milestone demonstrates rising public recognition of organ donation as an act of humanity and social responsibility.

Organ donation pledges gain momentum through awareness efforts
The Government of India said it remains committed to reducing the gap between the demand and availability of organs and tissues for transplantation. Therefore, authorities continue to focus on awareness campaigns, stronger institutional capacity and improved transplant systems.
Officials also stressed the importance of maintaining ethical, transparent and patient-centric transplantation practices nationwide.
The organ donation movement received renewed momentum in recent years following repeated appeals by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Mann Ki Baat programme. Through these messages, he encouraged citizens to support organ donation and contribute to saving lives.
Meanwhile, the Aadhaar-based registration portal has simplified the pledge process. The platform enables citizens to register securely and conveniently, thereby improving accessibility and transparency.
As a result, public participation has increased significantly. Officials said the growing number of Organ donation pledges reflects stronger trust in the organ donation ecosystem and greater awareness of its life-saving impact.
The government described the achievement as an important step towards meeting transplantation needs while strengthening the culture of voluntary organ and tissue donation in India.
