IIA building foundation laid to boost astronomy research in India

Bengaluru: Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh laid the IIA building foundation to strengthen India’s astronomy research and space science capabilities.

He inaugurated the ₹75 crore project at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics campus in Bengaluru on April 28. The seven-storey structure will cover nearly one lakh square feet. Officials said the facility will support advanced research and modern scientific infrastructure.

The Minister said the institute plays a key role in global astronomy research. He added that scientists at IIA develop indigenous technologies for national and international space missions. Moreover, he noted that these technologies support missions such as AstroSat and Aditya-L1.

He emphasised that the new building will meet growing research demands. It will also support students and scientists working on advanced space projects. Therefore, the initiative will strengthen India’s position in observational science.

IIA building foundation drives telescope expansion

The IIA building foundation supports major telescope projects announced in the Union Budget 2026. These include the National Large Solar Telescope and the National Large Optical-Infrared Telescope.

In addition, authorities will upgrade the Himalayan Chandra Telescope and develop the COSMOS-2 Planetarium. Officials said these projects will expand India’s space observation capacity.

The Minister highlighted IIA’s legacy, which began with the Madras Observatory. He said the institute operates key centres in Kodaikanal, Kavalur, Gauribidanur and Hanle. These centres support both solar and night-time astronomy research.

Furthermore, he stressed the need to engage young people in science. He said outreach programmes and digital platforms can increase interest in research careers.

The new building will include laboratories, classrooms, office spaces and a conference facility. Authorities expect to complete the project within two years.

Officials said the government continues to strengthen research infrastructure across the country. As a result, the IIA building foundation will support future discoveries and innovation in India.
