OBC education schemes see spending rise to ₹2042 crore

New Delhi: Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar on Tuesday said OBC education schemes saw spending rise to ₹2042.08 crore in FY 2025–26, reflecting expanded support for students.

He stated that the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment implemented multiple schemes for OBC, EBC, and DNT students. These initiatives aim to improve access to quality education and support academic progress.

According to him, expenditure under OBC welfare schemes increased by 36.96% compared to FY 2024–25. As a result, more students benefited from targeted assistance programmes.

The government reported significant growth across scholarship schemes. Spending rose by 59.13% under pre-matric scholarships. Similarly, post-matric scholarships recorded a 27.18% increase.

OBC education schemes boost top class learning support

Expenditure under Top Class Education in Schools increased by 154%. In addition, Top Class Education in Colleges saw a rise of 105.80% compared to the previous financial year.

These increases reflect the government’s focus on strengthening educational access. Moreover, officials said the schemes aim to support students from socially and educationally disadvantaged communities.

The department also emphasised improving delivery and outreach mechanisms. Therefore, authorities are working to ensure timely benefits reach eligible students.

Officials said the initiatives would enhance academic progression among beneficiaries. At the same time, they aim to create better opportunities for higher education.

The Minister said the government would continue to prioritise inclusive education policies. He added that sustained investment would help bridge gaps in access and outcomes.
