Kavitha blames Congress over Mancherial farmer deaths

Hyderabad: Mancherial farmer deaths drew sharp criticism from Telangana Rakshana Sena chief Kalvakuntla Kavitha, who blamed the Congress government for alleged delays in paddy procurement.

Kavitha expressed grief over the deaths of four farmers in Lakshmipet mandal of Mancherial district. The incident occurred when a wall collapsed during heavy rain and strong winds late at night. According to her, farmers had stayed near paddy stocks to protect them from unseasonal rainfall.

She said around 15 farmers had gathered in Kothur and Gampalpalli villages during the incident. They were attempting to safeguard harvested grain due to delays in procurement, she alleged. As a result, they remained exposed to adverse weather conditions.

The TRS chief claimed that procurement delays forced farmers to take such risks. She argued that timely government action could have prevented the situation. Therefore, she held the administration responsible for failing to protect farmers.

Mancherial farmer deaths prompt compensation demand

The Mancherial farmer deaths also led Kavitha to demand immediate financial relief for affected families. She urged the state government to provide ex gratia compensation to the families of the deceased farmers.

In addition, she claimed that seven farmers had died within a week across Telangana due to procurement-related issues. She said these incidents reflected broader gaps in the procurement system during the Yasangi season.

Kavitha called on the government to speed up paddy procurement across the state. She said delays were creating distress among farmers and increasing their vulnerability to weather-related risks.

She further stressed the need for better planning and timely intervention. According to her, efficient procurement would reduce pressure on farmers and prevent such incidents in the future.

The TRS leader said the government must take urgent corrective steps. She added that ensuring farmer safety and welfare should remain a priority during the ongoing procurement season.
