Hyderabad: Civil Supplies Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy directed officials to speed up Telangana paddy procurement and complete the process by the end of May during a high-level review meeting held through video conference on Sunday.
Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao, Civil Supplies Commissioner Stephen Ravindra, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, ministers, district collectors and senior officials attended the meeting.
Uttam Kumar Reddy said paddy production reached 141 lakh metric tonnes across Telangana during the current season. He stated that the government fixed a target to procure 75 lakh metric tonnes at Minimum Support Price.
Officials established 8,575 procurement centres across the state. So far, authorities procured 51 lakh metric tonnes of paddy and released ₹8,749 crore directly into farmers’ bank accounts.
The Minister said the government supplied 21 crore gunny bags at the field level to avoid inconvenience to farmers. He instructed officials to immediately lift the remaining 8.5 lakh metric tonnes lying at procurement centres.
He also ordered officials to set up check-posts in border districts to stop illegal inflow of paddy, maize and jowar from neighbouring states.
Telangana paddy procurement review stresses faster lifting
Uttam Kumar Reddy warned rice millers and middlemen against exploiting farmers through moisture cuts and quality deductions. He directed officials to upload procurement details quickly through tabs to ensure faster MSP payments.
The Minister said farmer welfare remained the government’s highest priority. He also asked officials to counter misinformation related to procurement operations.
Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka instructed authorities to increase the number of hamalis at procurement centres to speed up lifting work.
Bhatti Vikramarka said earlier governments delayed payments to farmers for several months. However, he said the present government ensured quicker payments and smoother procurement operations.
He also urged officials to create awareness among farmers against burning agricultural waste. According to him, the measure would help reduce air pollution in urban areas.
Later, ministers and officials reviewed arrangements for Women’s Welfare Week scheduled from May 25 to May 30 under the Praja Palana Pragathi Pranalika programme.
Women and Child Welfare Minister Danasari Anasuya Seethakka, Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao, Women and Child Welfare Secretary Anita Ramachandran and Dana Kishore attended the review.
Officials discussed foundation stone ceremonies for Indira Mahila Shakti buildings and Anganwadi centres. They also reviewed awareness programmes on women’s safety, the POSH Act, solar power initiatives and Amma Mata-Anganwadi Bata activities.
