Nitin Gadkari reviews highway projects in Northeast states

New Delhi: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari reviewed the progress, quality and maintenance of major Northeast highway projects in Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland during a high-level meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The review covered 1,489 km of National Highway projects in Mizoram, 1,759 km in Manipur and 1,578 km in Nagaland. Gadkari conducted the assessment after examining inputs received through media reports and social media platforms.

Senior officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and project contractors attended the meeting.

During the review, the Union Minister stressed the need for timely project completion and strict compliance with quality standards. He also called for the wider use of advanced technologies to develop sustainable and efficient road infrastructure.

Gadkari said improved highway connectivity remains crucial for boosting economic growth, enhancing regional integration and improving travel convenience for commuters across the northeastern region.

The Minister directed officials to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and ensure that all projects progress according to schedule. He also asked agencies to focus on long-term durability and better riding quality on key highway corridors.

Northeast highway projects to focus on monsoon readiness

A major part of the review focused on preparations for the upcoming monsoon season. Gadkari instructed officials to implement preventive measures and establish effective response systems to maintain road safety and infrastructure durability.

He emphasised the importance of drainage management, slope protection works and rapid-response mechanisms to minimise disruptions caused by heavy rainfall.

The Minister said authorities should accelerate on-ground execution while maintaining high construction standards. He added that adopting modern construction practices would improve asset life and ensure seamless connectivity in challenging terrain.

Officials also discussed strategies to strengthen highway resilience in vulnerable areas that frequently face weather-related disruptions during the monsoon.

Gadkari reiterated that quality infrastructure development remains a priority for the government and urged all stakeholders to work in coordination to deliver reliable road networks across the northeastern states.

The review forms part of ongoing efforts to improve transport infrastructure in the region and support economic development through better connectivity and safer highways.
