Hyderabad: Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy reaffirmed the Telangana government’s commitment to supporting the Telangana handloom sector and improving the livelihoods of weavers during the “Thread Pochampally” exhibition at HITEX on Saturday.
The Minister said the handloom industry remains a major source of employment and plays an important role in empowering women. He assured weaving communities that the government would continue taking steps to ensure that no artisan abandons the profession because of financial difficulties.
Uttam Kumar Reddy praised the skill and dedication of Pochampally weavers. He described the exhibition as a celebration of thousands of weaving families whose craftsmanship has earned global recognition for Pochampally products.
More than 100 stalls displayed authentic Pochampally sarees, fabrics and contemporary handloom products. The exhibition also featured live weaving demonstrations that allowed visitors to observe the traditional Ikat tie-and-dye process and interact directly with artisans.
The Minister congratulated organisers, designers and weavers for making the event successful. He said such exhibitions help create awareness about traditional crafts while strengthening direct engagement between producers and consumers.
Telangana handloom sector targets wider market reach
Uttam Kumar Reddy said the government is working to expand market opportunities through direct marketing channels, exhibitions and e-commerce platforms. As a result, artisans will have better access to consumers and a larger share of sales revenue.
He also stressed the need for innovation and product diversification. According to him, stronger collaboration between weavers, designers and educational institutions can help develop products that appeal to younger buyers and international markets.
Furthermore, the Minister highlighted the importance of digital connectivity and branding in expanding the reach of handloom products. He said online platforms can help take Pochampally creations to customers across India and abroad.
The Minister also emphasised skill development for the next generation of weavers. He said training in design, entrepreneurship and digital commerce will help young artisans adapt to changing market demands and build sustainable careers.
Uttam Kumar Reddy stated that the government’s long-term goal is to transform the handloom industry into a globally competitive creative economy while preserving traditional skills and cultural heritage.
He urged consumers to purchase authentic handloom products and support artisan families. According to him, public support remains essential for sustaining weaving communities and protecting Telangana’s rich handloom traditions for future generations.
