New Delhi: The Asian Games Fun Run attracted more than 40,000 participants in Thiruvananthapuram as India hosted the first-ever event under the Olympic Council of Asia’s “Asian Games for All” initiative.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurated the programme at the University Stadium on June 23. Kerala Governor Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar, Indian Olympic Association President P. T. Usha and Kerala Sports Minister O. J. Janeesh Kumar attended the event.
Addressing the gathering, Mandaviya described Kerala as an important contributor to India’s sporting culture. He said the state’s passion for sports is reflected in both its athletes and the wider public.
The Minister highlighted Kerala’s contribution to athlete development through national programmes. According to him, 115 athletes from Kerala, including 69 women, are currently part of the Khelo India programme.
He also noted that 17 athletes from the state are receiving advanced support under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme.
Asian Games Fun Run highlights India’s sporting ambitions
The event witnessed participation from educational institutions, sports associations and citizens from across the state. In addition, the programme featured performances by the Indian Army Band, Zumba sessions, bodybuilding displays and demonstrations by yoga and gymnastics athletes.
Speaking about India’s long-term sporting goals, Mandaviya said the country has secured hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and has submitted a bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a target of making India one of the world’s top 10 sporting nations by 2036 and among the top five by 2047.
The Minister also expressed confidence about India’s prospects at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan. Furthermore, he said athletes from Kerala would play a significant role in the country’s medal-winning performances.
Following the Asian Games Fun Run, organisers conducted a large rally featuring roller skaters, electric scooters and Bullet motorcycles with participation from more than 1,000 children and youth.
The celebrations concluded with a closing ceremony at the Central Stadium. Officials said the event showcased sportsmanship, fitness and community participation while reinforcing Kerala’s position as a leading sporting state.
