Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A approved with airport corridor expansion

Gujarat: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A, a 6.032-km corridor connecting Koteshwar Road and Ahmedabad Airport. The project will include five stations, of which four will be elevated and one underground. The total completion cost, including interest during construction, was pegged at Rs.2,169.04 crore.

With the addition of Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A, the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro network will expand to 77.63 km after the new section becomes operational. The stations planned on the corridor are Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar and Airport.

The government said the new corridor would strengthen public transport by providing direct metro access to the airport and improving links between residential and commercial areas that currently lack efficient transit connectivity. In addition, the project is expected to integrate seamlessly with the existing Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro corridor.

The expansion is also expected to support future infrastructure development around the city. Authorities noted that sports facilities may be developed in nearby areas ahead of the World Police Games 2029 and the Commonwealth Games 2030.

Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A to improve mobility and jobs

Officials said the project would help reduce traffic congestion by offering an efficient alternative to road transport. As a result, vehicle movement could become smoother, travel times may decline and road safety could improve across key parts of Ahmedabad.

The government also highlighted environmental gains. Increased metro usage is expected to reduce dependence on fossil fuel-based transport and lower carbon emissions in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

Furthermore, improved access to the airport, railway stations and bus depots is likely to boost productivity and support economic activity. Better connectivity around new stations could attract investment and encourage business growth in previously less accessible areas.

The Cabinet said the project would also enhance social equity by expanding access to public transport across different socio-economic groups. Consequently, residents could benefit from shorter commutes and improved access to essential services.

During peak construction activity, Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A is expected to generate employment for around 2,000 people. In addition, about 500 personnel are likely to be engaged in the operation and maintenance of the system after commissioning.
