New Delhi: DRDO chief Dr Samir V Kamat unveiled advanced armoured platforms designed for the armed forces, highlighting improved firepower, mobility, and protection during the launch in Maharashtra.
The platforms, developed by the Vehicles Research and Development Establishment, include both tracked and wheeled variants. They were introduced at the DRDO facility in Ahilyanagar on April 25, 2026 to address evolving operational requirements.
Both versions feature an indigenously designed 30 mm crewless turret with a 7.62 mm PKT gun. They are also capable of launching anti-tank guided missiles. Officials said the design supports multiple combat roles depending on deployment needs.
The platforms are powered by high-capacity engines paired with automatic transmission. As a result, they deliver high speed, strong power-to-weight ratio, and the ability to navigate steep gradients and obstacles. They also offer STANAG level 4 and 5 protection with modular blast and ballistic shielding.
Indigenous advanced armoured platforms boost defence ecosystem
The vehicles include amphibious capability with hydro-jet systems, allowing them to cross water obstacles efficiently. This feature improves operational flexibility across varied terrains.
The indigenous content currently stands at about 65%, with plans to increase it to 90% in future versions. Officials said this move aligns with the push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
Production involved collaboration with Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Bharat Forge Limited, along with several MSMEs. This partnership aims to strengthen India’s defence industrial ecosystem.
Senior DRDO scientists, directors general, and industry representatives attended the event. Teams from multiple DRDO laboratories also participated, reflecting coordinated development efforts behind the advanced armoured platforms.
