Telangana showcases EV charging infrastructure model at national conference

Hyderabad: Telangana presented its EV charging infrastructure model and implementation strategy at a national conference held under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme. The event took place in Bengaluru. Representatives from Central ministries, state departments and industry stakeholders attended the conference.

Heavy Industries Minister H D Kumaraswamy attended the inaugural session. Senior officials from several states also participated. The conference focused on expanding EV charging infrastructure across the country.

Special Chief Secretary for Energy Navin Mittal outlined Telangana’s progress. He said the state registered more than 2.8 lakh electric vehicles. Moreover, 91,572 new EVs were registered during 2025–26. He added that nearly five percent of new vehicle registrations are electric.

Officials said the EV market value reached Rs 6,297 crore in 2025–26. In addition, the state operates 325 electric buses from six city depots. Authorities are also retrofitting 240 diesel buses into electric buses. Therefore, public transport electrification is expanding steadily.

Telangana expands EV charging infrastructure under PM E-DRIVE

The state operates 1,063 EV charging stations across Telangana. Around 600 stations function within Hyderabad. Furthermore, TGREDCO runs nearly 200 public charging stations in GHMC limits. These measures strengthen the EV charging infrastructure network.

Officials reported that EV charging consumption increased nearly four times year-on-year. This rise reflects growing adoption of electric vehicles. Consequently, demand for charging facilities continues to increase.

TGREDCO plans to establish 116 new charging locations under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme. The organisation secured Rs 10.24 crore under Phase-I. In addition, the state aims to set up 6,000 charging and battery swapping stations by 2030. It targets 12,000 stations by 2035.

Telangana also provides full exemption on road tax and registration fees for electric vehicles. Therefore, authorities expect faster adoption of EVs. Officials said the state will continue to strengthen EV charging infrastructure to support sustainable transport growth.
