India engages US over proposed Section 301 tariffs

New Delhi: India is continuing discussions with the United States over proposed Section 301 tariffs after the US Trade Representative (USTR) concluded investigations involving 60 economies, including India.

The USTR has proposed additional tariffs on imports from the affected economies under Section 301 of the US Trade Act of 1974. However, products covered under Section 232 tariffs and certain other categories remain outside the scope of the proposal.

According to the USTR, the proposed measures are not final. Stakeholders can request participation in public hearings until June 22, while written comments can be submitted until July 6.

The USTR will conduct public hearings on July 7 before making a final decision on the proposed tariff measures. Officials said the review process would consider feedback received from stakeholders and industry representatives.

India said it remains actively engaged with the United States as part of the ongoing Section 301 proceedings.

Section 301 tariffs remain under review

The USTR investigation covered measures adopted by 60 economies to regulate imports of goods. As part of the proposal, the agency also suggested a special mechanism for textile and apparel products.

Under that mechanism, selected economies could receive lower tariff rates for a specified volume of textile and apparel exports entering the US market.

Meanwhile, India is holding parallel discussions with the United States to finalise a framework agreement announced on February 2, 2026. The negotiations also align with the joint statement issued by both countries on February 7, 2026.

Furthermore, officials said engagement on trade issues would continue through established bilateral channels. The outcome of the Section 301 process could influence future trade arrangements between India and the United States.
