Government reviews LPG supply situation amid West Asia developments

New Delhi: Government of India reviewed the LPG supply situation and related energy and maritime developments during an inter-ministerial briefing held on Wednesday amid the evolving West Asia scenario. Officials from the Ministries of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and Information & Broadcasting shared updates on fuel availability and operational stability.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas informed that supply measures were in place to ensure uninterrupted availability of petroleum products and LPG. Moreover, authorities confirmed that 100% supply was maintained for domestic LPG, domestic PNG, and CNG for transport. Retail fuel outlets across the country continued normal operations without disruption.

During the last three days, about 1.39 crore LPG cylinders were delivered against bookings of around 1.40 crore cylinders. In addition, online bookings reached nearly 99%, while delivery authentication code-based deliveries rose to about 95%. These steps aimed to prevent diversion and strengthen transparency.

The Government emphasized rationalisation measures to stabilise the LPG supply situation. For instance, booking intervals were adjusted, refinery production was enhanced, and alternate fuels such as kerosene and coal were made available. Furthermore, states were advised to promote PNG adoption and monitor distribution to prevent hoarding.

Officials stated that enforcement drives were intensified nationwide. Consequently, more than 2,000 raids were conducted recently, along with over 1,160 surprise inspections at retail outlets and LPG distributorships. Penalties were imposed on several distributors to curb irregularities.

The briefing also highlighted progress in commercial LPG and 5 Kg FTL cylinders. During the past three days, about 1.90 lakh 5 Kg cylinders were sold. Since 3 April 2026, more than 11,870 awareness camps were organised, where over 2.10 lakh cylinders were distributed. Therefore, targeted distribution continued to support migrant labourers and priority sectors.

On natural gas expansion, authorities reported that about 7.03 lakh PNG connections were gasified since March 2026. Infrastructure was created for an additional 2.72 lakh connections. Meanwhile, around 7.49 lakh new customers registered for connections. These efforts contributed to easing pressure on LPG demand.

In maritime operations, two LPG vessels—SYMI and NV SUNSHINE—successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz and are scheduled to arrive at Indian ports on time. Additionally, all crew members involved in a recent incident in Omani waters were safely rescued. Officials confirmed that no other incidents involving Indian vessels were reported in the past 72 hours.

The Government reiterated that adequate fuel stocks were available nationwide. It also urged citizens to avoid panic buying, rely on official information, and conserve energy during the ongoing geopolitical situation.
