UIDAI deploys AI biometric deduplication for Aadhaar security

New Delhi: The Unique Identification Authority of India deployed AI biometric deduplication and document verification systems to strengthen Aadhaar security and protect the identities of over a billion residents.

The new platform enhances accuracy in enrolment and update transactions. It forms part of a multi-layered digital defence framework designed to safeguard data integrity. Through advanced computing, the system performs crores of calculations to detect duplication and prevent identity fraud.

UIDAI runs one of the world’s largest biometric deduplication systems. Every new Aadhaar enrolment undergoes cross-verification against the entire database to ensure uniqueness. For this process, UIDAI developed indigenous AI models covering fingerprint, face and iris modalities in collaboration with the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad.

These models operate on high-performance NVIDIA DGX inference infrastructure. As a result, the system processes billions of computations per transaction at population scale. Authorities have already rolled out enhanced deduplication in several states and plan nationwide completion in the coming months.

AI biometric deduplication strengthens fraud prevention

In addition to biometric checks, UIDAI introduced AI-based document metadata extraction and verification. The platform verifies documents through DigiLocker APIs and cross-checks them with trusted sources. Moreover, it uses advanced AI inferencing infrastructure for semantic analysis and metadata extraction.

This integrated framework aims to stop fraud at the source. It ensures document authenticity while reducing turnaround time for enrolment and updates. Consequently, Aadhaar number holders can expect faster and more reliable services.

By combining AI biometric deduplication with smart document verification, UIDAI has reinforced its digital safety mission. The initiative seeks to maintain one unique identity per resident while enhancing service quality and system integrity.
