NHAI launches MLFF tolling system at Surat Bharuch highway

New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India on Saturday launched a new barrier-free toll collection system at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza on the Surat–Bharuch section of NH-48 in Gujarat.

Around 41,500 vehicles passed through the facility on the first day. As a result, traffic moved faster and congestion reduced significantly at the toll point.

The MLFF tolling system enables vehicles to cross without stopping. It relies on Automatic Number Plate Recognition and FASTag technology for seamless and contactless payments. Therefore, travel time improves while fuel consumption drops.

Officials said the system would also lower emissions by easing vehicle movement. In addition, it reduces operational costs by removing manual toll collection and physical barriers.

Users must keep sufficient balance in their FASTag accounts for uninterrupted travel. If the balance is low or the tag fails, authorities will issue an electronic notice for non-payment.

Users must pay the notified amount within 72 hours of receiving the electronic notice. Otherwise, authorities will charge double the standard toll fee for that vehicle category.

The system allows users to access notices and raise grievances within the same period. Meanwhile, non-payment may lead to FASTag blacklisting and restrictions on vehicle services.

Officials said the initiative would enhance transparency in toll operations. Furthermore, it would help build a more efficient and cost-effective highway network.
