India-Canada CEPA talks gain momentum as trade target set at USD 50 billion

New Delhi: India-Canada CEPA talks received fresh momentum after Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Canadian Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu reaffirmed their commitment to conclude negotiations by the end of this year and raise bilateral trade to USD 50 billion by 2030.

Piyush Goyal held a series of high-level meetings with Canadian business leaders, institutional investors and government representatives during his visit to Toronto. The discussions focused on investments, technology partnerships and stronger economic cooperation between the two countries.

During the Canada–India Building Bridges event at the World Trade Centre Toronto, Goyal highlighted growing opportunities in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, clean technology, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and energy.

Canadian Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu announced that Canada would send a Team Canada Trade Mission to India in November this year. He said Canadian companies planned to explore opportunities in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, renewable energy, critical minerals and digital infrastructure.

Goyal and Sidhu later co-chaired the Canada–India Investment Roundtable attended by major banks, pension funds and financial investors. The ministers discussed infrastructure development, financial reforms and ease of doing business initiatives in India.

The Union minister invited Canadian investors to partner with India in clean energy, manufacturing, technology and supply-chain diversification projects. He also highlighted India’s Production Linked Incentive schemes and expanding Global Capability Centre ecosystem.

Apart from official meetings, Goyal interacted with executives from leading Canadian companies involved in insurance, banking, food processing and critical minerals processing sectors. The discussions covered investment opportunities and India’s improving regulatory environment.

During the visit, Goyal also paid tribute at the Kanishka Memorial in Toronto and met families of victims of the Air India AI 182 terror attack.

Later, he addressed members of the Indian diaspora in Brampton and said the community played an important role in strengthening economic and cultural ties between India and Canada.

The minister is leading the largest Indian business delegation ever sent to Canada. More than 100 Indian companies are participating in the three-day visit aimed at strengthening bilateral economic relations.
