New Delhi: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the Centre has intensified El Niño preparedness measures to protect farmers and minimise the impact of any adverse weather conditions during the 2026 monsoon season.
Chairing a high-level review meeting in New Delhi, Chouhan directed central departments and state governments to strengthen coordination, improve planning and ensure timely support for farmers. He said there was no need for panic as the government had already begun extensive preparations.
The Minister said the government would focus on seed availability, moisture conservation, water management and alternative crop planning. He added that farmers must receive timely advisories, suitable seeds and practical solutions based on local conditions.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the southwest monsoon may remain below normal this year, with seasonal rainfall estimated at around 90 per cent of the Long Period Average. Officials also indicated that El Niño conditions could develop during the monsoon season.
Despite these concerns, Chouhan said reservoir storage levels remain encouraging. Current water storage stands at 127.01 per cent of the normal level for this period, which will support irrigation needs during the Kharif season.
El Niño preparedness focuses on district-level action
Chouhan directed states to closely monitor districts that may experience low rainfall or prolonged dry spells. Furthermore, he asked officials to activate contingency plans at the district level and implement them on the ground rather than treating them as routine paperwork.
The Minister stressed the importance of promoting drought-resistant crops, delayed sowing strategies and short-duration crop varieties wherever required. He also instructed states to ensure farmers receive only certified and high-quality seeds.
In addition, Chouhan highlighted the need for water conservation measures such as farm ponds, water harvesting structures and moisture-retention practices. He said scientific water management could significantly reduce crop losses even during periods of low rainfall.
The review also focused on disease and pest management. Therefore, officials will identify potential threats in advance and share timely guidance with farmers.
Chouhan further called for stronger mobile-based advisory systems. He said farmers should receive weather alerts, crop recommendations and pest-management information directly through digital platforms.
The Minister emphasised continuous monitoring of state preparedness and assured support to states that require additional assistance. He said the Centre’s objective is to protect farmers’ interests, maintain confidence in the agricultural sector and ensure a successful Kharif season despite weather uncertainties.
