India conducts successful flight-trial of Advanced Agni MIRV missile

Odisha: India successfully conducted the flight-trial of an Advanced Agni missile equipped with a Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicle (MIRV) system from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha on May 8.

The missile carried multiple payloads and targeted different locations spread across a large geographical area in the Indian Ocean Region. Officials confirmed that the system achieved all mission objectives during the test.

Multiple ground-based and ship-based telemetry stations tracked the entire trajectory of the missile from lift-off to the impact of all payloads. Moreover, flight data validated the performance of the system throughout the mission.

The trial demonstrated India’s capability to engage multiple strategic targets using a single missile platform. Defence researchers said the development strengthens the country’s technological preparedness in advanced missile systems.

DRDO laboratories developed the missile with support from industries across India. Senior scientists from DRDO and personnel from the Indian Army witnessed the successful test.

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Army and industry partners for the achievement. He stated that the successful trial would significantly enhance the country’s defence readiness in response to emerging security challenges.

MIRV missile strengthens strategic defence capability

The MIRV missile system allows a single missile to deploy multiple independently targeted warheads. Consequently, it increases operational efficiency and strategic reach while optimising launch resources.

Officials said the successful trial marks an important milestone in advanced missile technology development. In addition, the test confirms the reliability of tracking systems and integrated command coordination.

The mission also highlighted close coordination between defence laboratories, armed forces and industry partners. Furthermore, the achievement reflects continued progress in indigenous strategic systems under national defence programmes.

With this successful flight-test, India expanded its capabilities in advanced re-entry vehicle technology and multi-target engagement systems.
