HYDRAA protects 34 acres from encroachments in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: HYDRAA protected nearly 34 acres of lake and government land from illegal occupation during a major anti-encroachment operation in Madhapur and Kokapet areas of Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Officials said the agency secured land worth nearly Rs 4,000 crore after identifying large-scale encroachments on lakes and government properties.

The agency protected 6.05 acres of Eidulakunta lake in Khanamet village under Serilingampally mandal. Authorities also secured another 5.16 acres of adjoining government land from encroachers.

According to officials, local residents complained that encroachers altered lake boundaries and diverted flood channels linked to Thammidikunta and Sunnam Cheruvu.

HYDRAA later conducted inspections with revenue, irrigation and municipal officials. Authorities confirmed the lake boundaries using revenue records and satellite images provided by the National Remote Sensing Centre.

Officials alleged that encroachers exploited boundary disputes between Kukatpally and Serilingampally mandals to occupy lake land and nearby government property.

Meanwhile, officials found that a private construction company obtained permissions for a 14-floor building in 2022 using different survey numbers. However, field inspections revealed excavation activity inside the lake area.

Authorities then fenced the entire 11.21 acres covering the lake and adjoining government land. Officials estimated the value of the protected land in Madhapur at nearly Rs 1,800 crore.

In another operation, HYDRAA cleared encroachments inside Kotha Cheruvu at Kokapet in Gandipet mandal.

Officials said the lake originally spread across 72 acres under Full Tank Level limits. However, realtors allegedly occupied more than 20 acres in the upper portion by constructing bunds inside the lake.

During inspections, officials identified fencing structures, temporary sheds and sports facilities built inside the water body area.

Authorities also demolished constructions spread across 1.09 acres allegedly developed by a real estate company near Gold Fish Villas.

Officials cleared the encroachments, restored lake boundaries and fenced the land to prevent future occupation attempts.

According to estimates, the value of the protected land at Kokapet stood at around Rs 2,200 crore.

Officials said the operations formed part of ongoing efforts to safeguard lakes, flood channels and government land from illegal occupation in Hyderabad.
