PM Surya Ghar targets 75 lakh rooftop solar households by December 2026

New Delhi: Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi said PM Surya Ghar had crossed 40 lakh beneficiary households within two years and was on track to reach 75 lakh rooftop solar installations by December 2026.

Speaking at an event marking two years of the scheme, the Minister said more than 65 lakh applications were already in the pipeline. He added that the programme was witnessing strong public participation across the country.

Joshi said the government introduced the Utility-Linked Aggregation model to speed up rooftop solar adoption among underserved households. Under the initiative, utilities have planned nearly 30 lakh rooftop solar installations across states.

He said the scheme mainly benefits families consuming between 1 kW and 3 kW of electricity. Moreover, it helps expand access to affordable and clean energy.

The Minister highlighted the rapid growth of India’s solar sector. He said the first 50 GW of solar capacity took 96 months to achieve. However, the next 50 GW took only 36 months, while the increase from 100 GW to 150 GW required just 14 months.

Joshi said May 2026 recorded the strongest monthly performance since the launch of PM Surya Ghar. During the month, authorities installed a record 3.16 lakh rooftop solar systems and added 15,000 households in a single day.

He said subsidy disbursements under the scheme had crossed ₹22,750 crore. Of this amount, ₹2,743 crore was released in May 2026 alone.

Furthermore, the Minister said more than 17 lakh households had achieved zero electricity bills through rooftop solar installations. He added that monthly installations had increased from about 7,000 before the scheme to more than three lakh now.

Joshi said the government planned to integrate battery energy storage systems as costs declined. He also stressed that the Model Solar Village initiative would help expand adoption further.

The Minister launched the PM Surya Ghar logo and a dedicated WhatsApp bot during the event. He also felicitated top-performing states, utilities, banks and vendors for their contribution to the programme.

The scheme, launched on February 13, 2024, has an outlay of ₹75,021 crore. As of May 2026, more than one crore households had registered on the national portal and over 33 lakh rooftop solar systems had been installed, adding more than 12 GW of capacity.
