Hyderabad: Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy urged Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to expedite NTPC Ramagundam Phase-II to boost power generation in Telangana.
He wrote to the Chief Minister and highlighted the rising electricity demand in the state. Therefore, he stressed the need to expand generation capacity quickly.
Kishan Reddy recalled that the first phase of the project includes two 800-MW units. Together, they generate 1,600 MW of electricity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the project to the nation in 2023. Since then, it has supported the state’s power supply.
The minister also noted that Telangana recorded peak demand of 18,139 MW on March 3, 2026. Moreover, he said demand will continue to grow in the coming years.
Therefore, he stressed that additional thermal power capacity will help stabilise the electricity grid.
NTPC Ramagundam Phase-II to add 2,400 MW power capacity
NTPC plans to develop the second phase with three additional 800-MW units. As a result, NTPC Ramagundam Phase-II will add 2,400 MW of power capacity.
According to the minister, about 85 percent of the electricity will go to Telangana. This allocation will follow the same pattern as the first phase.
He also highlighted NTPC’s use of ultra-supercritical technology. This technology improves efficiency and reduces generation costs.
Therefore, Kishan Reddy urged the state government to support the project. He also requested the state to sign a power purchase agreement with NTPC.
In addition, the minister asked the government to allow NTPC to arrange coal supply for all five 800-MW units.
