Telangana reports no Ebola cases, says minister

Hyderabad: Ebola cases have not been reported in Telangana so far, Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha said on Tuesday after reviewing preparedness measures in Hyderabad.

The minister said authorities had not identified any person showing Ebola symptoms in the state. He also assured the public that there was no need for panic as the government continued strict monitoring.

The review meeting took place at the Aarogyasri Trust office in Hyderabad. Health Department Principal Secretary Christina Z Chongthu, Public Health Director Ravinder Naik and Medical Education Director Narendra Kumar attended the meeting along with senior officials.

Officials informed the minister that the state implemented all precautionary guidelines issued by the Central government following Ebola outbreaks reported in some African countries.

Authorities intensified screening of passengers arriving from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and South Sudan at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad.

Health teams conducted thermal screening and medical examinations for incoming passengers from affected countries.

Ebola cases under surveillance at airport and hospitals

Officials deployed special teams comprising doctors, health inspectors, field staff and paramedical personnel at the airport. The department also kept 108 ambulances on standby round the clock.

Gandhi Hospital established a separate 10-bed isolation ward for suspected patients. Authorities appointed General Medicine HOD Dr Sunil Kumar as the nodal officer for Ebola monitoring.

Officials said suspected samples would be sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for testing.

Travellers arriving from affected countries without symptoms were placed under 21-day home isolation. District surveillance teams continued monitoring them regularly.

According to officials, 58 passengers arrived in Hyderabad from Ebola-affected countries till May 25. However, none of them showed symptoms. Authorities placed all passengers under Category-I home isolation.

Damodar Rajanarsimha directed officials to continue strict monitoring and immediately shift any suspected patient to Gandhi Hospital isolation facilities.

He also instructed hospitals to follow infection control protocols and maintain coordination with airport authorities and surveillance teams.
