Centre approves Thiruvarur bypass project in Tamil Nadu

New Delhi: Centre approved the Thiruvarur bypass project in Tamil Nadu with an estimated cost of ₹1,427.61 crore for construction of a four-lane corridor and two additional Road Over Bridges.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced the approval on Monday through a post on X.

The project includes a 14.9-km four-lane bypass on the Nagapattinam–Thanjavur section of National Highway-83. Authorities will also construct two additional ROBs on NH-129A and NH-134A.

According to Gadkari, the project will strengthen connectivity between industrial centres such as Tiruchirappalli and Coimbatore with the port towns of Karaikal and Nagapattinam.

Officials said the bypass would begin from the Adiyakkamangalam–Thandalai stretch and pass through Athipuliyur, Andipalayam, Kidaramkondan, Pallivaramangalam, Perumpugalur, Elavangarkudi and Anaivadapathy Colony.

The minister stated that the project would improve regional economic activity and support smoother transport movement across the region.

Thiruvarur bypass expected to reduce congestion

Officials said the new alignment would significantly reduce traffic congestion inside Thiruvarur town by diverting vehicles away from densely populated commercial areas.

The project is also expected to cut travel time by nearly 15 minutes and improve road safety for commuters.

Authorities said the alignment would improve connectivity with State Highways 23 and 65. The project will also provide easier access to the Thyagaraja Swamy Temple.

The Centre said the infrastructure project formed part of broader efforts to strengthen highway connectivity and transport efficiency in Tamil Nadu.
