Mahbubnagar Secunderabad Medchal rail upgrade approved at ₹285 crore

Hyderabad: Indian Railways has approved a ₹285.01-crore rail upgrade project on the Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal section of South Central Railway. The project will modernise the existing electric traction infrastructure and improve train operations on one of the country’s important high-density rail corridors.

Under the sanctioned project, Indian Railways will upgrade the existing 1×25 kV electric traction system to a modern 2×25 kV electric traction system. The work will cover approximately 141 route kilometres and aims to provide a more reliable and efficient power supply for train services.

Officials said the upgraded system will strengthen operational efficiency and support the growing demand for passenger and freight transportation. Moreover, the project forms part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to enhance capacity across heavily used rail routes.

The Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal stretch is part of the Dharmavaram-Dhone-Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal-Mudkhed-Indore-Ajmer rail corridor. This route carries significant passenger and freight traffic and plays an important role in regional connectivity.

Rail upgrade project to improve freight capacity

According to Indian Railways, the new traction system will deliver a more stable power supply for train operations. As a result, trains will operate more smoothly, safely and efficiently across the corridor.

Furthermore, the upgraded infrastructure will improve the movement of freight trains. Officials said the project would enhance both carrying capacity and operational speed, allowing goods to move more efficiently across the network.

The rail upgrade project is also expected to support trade and industrial activity in Telangana and neighbouring regions. Improved freight handling capacity can help businesses transport raw materials and finished products more effectively.

In addition, the project will strengthen the railway network’s ability to handle future growth in traffic demand. Railway authorities believe the upgraded system will improve overall corridor performance and reduce operational constraints.

The initiative reflects Indian Railways’ continued focus on building a modern and future-ready transportation network. It also aligns with efforts to improve infrastructure on key freight and passenger routes across the country.

Officials stated that passengers and industries will benefit from enhanced reliability, better operational efficiency and stronger rail connectivity once the project is completed. Consequently, the corridor is expected to play an even greater role in supporting economic development and regional growth.
